The social sciences should produce college students who are strong critical thinkers and who understand and apply cultural relativism in everyday situations. Students should leave my classes prepared to interact and solve problems in our increasingly multicultural world. In order to achieve success in the work of culture, problematic concepts such as ethnocentrism and cultural relativity are explored.

Inevitably, these explorations demand that students let go of cultural notions that make them feel safe, comfortable and right, if only for an hour. In my Cultural Anthropology course I have developed assignments that provide students the opportunity to engage in observations of a hunting/gathering Amazonian culture, and to apply an anthropological theory of their choice to the data. By the end of the course, each student has produced knowledge through cultural analysis in the form of a written ethnography.
